The buzz around our industry these days is certainly centered on the impacts of U.S. Health Care Reform on nurses and hospitals. As a leading nurse staffing agency, we consider it our duty to understand, anticipate, and serve the needs of hospitals and nurses, alike.
As travel nursing agencies compete to become your agency of choice, the lure of free housing, free benefits, and other attractive bonuses weigh heavily in a nurse’s decision to choose one agency over another. The question is, is “free” really free? When you look closely you’ll find that the answer is, not exactly. Understanding how “free” works can help you compare apples to apples when it comes to choosing the right travel nursing agency.

Agency nurses’ pay is more often than not higher than staff nurses in the same positions. Agency nurses do not have to deal with as much of the hospital politics or some of the minimum hour and holiday requirements as staff nurses. But if you let these become your main motivation to be an agency RN and forget the real reason you became a nurse in the first place, which is caring for people in the communities you serve, you may come to resent not only agency nursing, but your nursing career in general.
