SCREENING AND HIRING PRACTICE

FlexRN was initially established by gathering colleagues of the company’s directors who were interested in working for a company with a dedication to delivering a higher standard of care, flexible hours and competitive compensation. A core group of nurses and respiratory therapists resulted. From this core group of approximately 12 nurses and respiratory therapists, the company has grown to its current employee base. Recruiting is done primarily b current FlexRN employee referral. This has resulted in extremely dedicated, highly qualified and reliable personnel. All employees are informed about FlexRN’s employee referral policy at the time of hire. It is suggested that they only refer colleagues they feel would deliver the quality of care they would desire for their own family members. As can be seen by our successful growth, interview rate and reputation for consistent quality of care, our referral recruitment system is serving us well. It is FlexRN’s policy that employees do NOT recruit staff nurses from the facilities they are staffing through our agency. Our other source of recruitment is through our website where nurses may request information about our company.

Initial screening is done via phone by the Director of Employee Services. Before an interview can be scheduled each potential employee is asked basic screening information to see if they meet the company’s basic requirements for interview. These basic requirements include: Graduation from an accredited school, current license or certificate, BLS certification and a minimum of one year experience in the specialty to which they desire to be staffed.

Once the initial screening is completed an interview will be arranged. During this time the potential employee is put through a comprehensive interview process, which begins with a  one on one character evaluation with a  clinically active member of the management team. The interview process also includes:

  • Employee intake sheet

  • Employee application: personal information, education history, employment history, and emergency contact. Copies of all licensure, certificates (BLS required, ACLS preferred)

  • W-4 form

  • I-9 Employment eligibility verification as determined by the INS, US Department of Justice

  • Comprehensive nationwide background check by Intellicorp. including OIG and GSA

  • Statement of Good Health signed by a physician stating potential employee is free of communicable disease, free from back injury and in good physical health to perform routine clinical duties.

  • Proof of Hepatitis B, MMR, and Varicella vaccinations and/or titers

  • Current negative PPD (within last 12 months) or negative chest  X-ray with TB questionnaire

  • 10 panel drug screen by Quest Diagnostics

  • Exam specific to area of specialty (all tests are primarily based on certification exams for each specialty i.e. CEN, CCRN etc.) All exams are done at the time of interview and in the presence of the clinical interviewer.  Our exams are NEVER done as “take home” or “open book” exams to help maintain a higher standard of employee. Calculators may be used for medication questions.

  • Review of major terms of employment and employee handbook containing company policies, benefits and procedures. FlexRN Employee Handbook covers: equal opportunity policies; employment status; recruitment and selection; compensation and benefits; promotion and evaluation, standards of conduct; grievances and suggestions and employee policies and procedures. Employee must sign major terms of employment agreement that states; “employee has read and will abide by individual policies and those contained in the employee handbook prior to offer of employment”.

  • Review of general safety and orientation policy including JCAHO/OSHA core competencies, which the employees are required to renew yearly. Review of policy or employee responsibilities in the even of workplace injuries/accidents; includes review of filing an injury/accident investigation report.

  • Skill checklist for each specialty area the potential employee is qualified in and requesting to work. (Yearly renewal)

  • Photo taken for ID

  • 2 recent professional references are required

After the interview has concluded an office checklist is completed to assure all qualifications for offer of employment have been met. Once all screening processes have been completed, including 2 favorable professional references and the potential employee meets all eligibility requirements; an offer of employment is made. Once the offer is accepted, the employee will receive an ID badge and is added to FlexRN’s payroll. Each Hospital orientation is done according to each facilities policy and procedure by the facility once the employee arrives. The FlexRN staffers will give a brief orientation prior to their first shift to include arrival time, check in location, items to bring, etc.
